altDr Alice Shaw was born in England in 1954. She grew up in Canada and completed her medical studies at Memorial University in Newfoundland where she received the Lange award for outstanding achievement.

In 1978 she immigrated to South Africa and completed her houseman year in Polokwane. In 1981 she moved to Pretoria where she worked in the renal unit at the Pretoria Academic Hospital as a senior medical officer until 1981.

Her husband Noel worked for Nestle and was transferred to Natal. Alice worked at the GJ Crookes hospital in Scottburgh until 1986.  Her specialization in Obstetrics and Gynaecology was started at the King Edward Hospital in Durban and was completed in Pretoria. The FCOG (SA) was obtained in 1990. She worked as a consultant at the Pretoria University for two years with a special interest in High Risk Obstetrics.

She went into private practice at the Wilgers Hospital in 1992 where she enjoyed her busy practice with a good mixture of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. 

Alice  has always been passionate about Obstetrics and loves delivering babies. She developed a special interest in the menopause and has twice passed the NAMS menopause examination to register as a menopause practitioner. She is on the SA Menopause Society committee. She thinks her main strength as a gynaecologist is her interest in people and her ability to listen.

In 2011 Dr Shaw realized a dream to live and work at the coast. She has moved her practice to the Knysna Life Hospital. She enjoys running and has done two Comrades and has started kayaking in Knysna. She is happily married to Noel and has two adult children Bridget and Andrew.
